WHY THIS BOOK EXISTS

Some people see birthdays as a pleasant annual acknowledgment of the passage of time. I am not one of those people.

I take my birthday off work. I believe adults deserve birthday cake. I have opinions about people who say they’re “too old” to celebrate. And years ago, I started a blog about birthdays, because apparently having one every year wasn’t enough.

Seven years of birthday rabbit holes later, I had stories, traditions, history, questionable statistics and more information about cake than any reasonable person needs.

So I went back to all of it. I researched more. I rewrote a lot. I found new stories. I organized the whole glorious mess by month.

This is that book.

Birthdays Are Best is for the person who loves birthdays, the person who claims not to care, the friend who is impossible to shop for, and anyone who deserves better than another card about reading glasses.
Give them an entire book about their favorite subject: themselves.

Jenn Q. Goddu has been waiting for her birthday since approximately October 7 of the previous year.

She started the Birthdays Are Best blog after realizing the internet was rich with an unacceptable amount of birthday information she had not yet read. Years later, she turned that obsession into a book.

She believes cake doesn’t have to be pretty to count, and that getting older beats the obvious alternative.
